This was probably my favorite film at #TIFF22 - such a fresh take on a period piece and an absolutely captivating performance by Vicky Krieps! I can’t stop thinking about it.

Wrapping up #Sundance2022!
Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul: 2.5/5 Regina Hall is an absolute goddess! Unfortunately, her and Sterling K Brown’s amazing performances couldn’t save this satirical mockumentary that started off strong but lost all momentum halfway through. Nearly worth it for her hats though!
The Janes: 4/5 Such a compelling Documentary about The Janes, an underground abortion railroad if you will. They provided over 11,000 safe abortions to women who were stuck in a system working against them and their right to body autonomy. I really enjoyed that while it was discussing a very politicized topic the film itself isn’t political, it let the stories and these fabulous woman speak for themselves.
Something In The Dirt: 3/5 A fun sense of mystery keep the pace of this movie going despite basic filmmaking (the budget clearly went to special effects). In the end the mystery is never quite solved and the result is just the aftertaste of brotastic conspiracy theories.
Piggy: 4/5 This Spanish horror film was full of social commentary, complicated characters, and was beautiful to look at. Director Carlota Pereda clearly had a vision and she executed it well.

What we watched Day 5 of #Sundance2022!
Am I Ok?: 4.5/5 I laughed, I cried, I laughed and cried! A heartfelt story about female friendship, and self-discovery at any age. Great performances and spectacular writing. Can’t wait for everyone to see it!
Emily The Criminal: 3.5/5 A gritty and brutal performance by Aubrey Plaza. This crime thriller stayed grounded because of its relatability. Never going too far off the rails into action movie territory. It reminded me of late nineties Soderberg movies like The Limey and Out of Sight but with less flash and a deeper character study at its core.
Sirens: 2.5/5 A fly on the wall look at the creative process, navigating a band dynamics, female friendships, political unrest and coming to terms with ones sexuality. It spotlights the outlet metal music provides to release rage and emotion against a society and world that you might not fit into. I liked this documentary but wish it focused more on the music and the entire band, by the end it felt a bit spread thin.
Framing Agnes: 2.5/5 Important subject matter with incredibly well spoken experts, this doc on trans figurehead Agnes loses its way to over-ambitious story structure. The message and lessons are there, but not in a commercial or easily digestible format. Missed opportunity.
Meet Me In The Bathroom: 2.5/5 A music documentary chronicling the New York underground scene that exploded in the early 2000’s. By the end I was left feeling more of a general vibe than a compelling narrative arc but worth it for the music. It works more like a companion piece to Lizzy Goodman’s book than a stand alone film.

What we watched Day 4 of #Sundance2022!
Brian And Charles: 3/5 Reminiscent of Lars and the Real Girl and Eagle Vs. Shark but doesn’t have the poignancy of the first or the wild absurdity of the latter. Charles Petrescu The Robot steals every moment he is on screen (you will never forget the robot design) but the mockumentary framework feels out of place and doesn’t add anything fresh or new.
Watcher: 4/5 A supremely tense horror thriller meditating on paranoia and voyeurism. An outstanding performance by Maika Monroe. She does so much with a simple glance you literally can’t take your eyes off of her, adding even more layers the ever evolving ideas about male and female gaze in film.
Cha Cha Real Smooth: 3.5/5 A modern rom-com featuring an excellent performance by director Cooper Raiff. While it presents a refreshingly sensitive and vulnerable presentation of a heterosexual male, the story is not unique and the pacing was slow.
Living: 2.5/5 While Bill Nighy is good, this film provides about 20 minutes of plot in a nearly 2 hour runtime. The message is sweet, albeit underwhelming: life’s short so love it to the fullest, or at least help make a playground before you die.
Hatching: 4/5 Low key obsessed with this completely original and bizarre Finnish movie. A horror fairly tale about the transition from childhood innocence to womanhood taking to its most extreme conclusion. Fantastic performances, memorable creature design and a perfectly juxtaposed production design.
My Old School: 3.5/5 What a completely unbelievable true story!! This documentary has the feeling of a joyous high school reunion told through a true crime lens. The conceit of some aspects of the storytelling/framework are a bit overly complicated but you are soon so engrossed you forgive it.

What we watched day 3 of #Sundance2022!
Good Luck To You Leo Grande: 4.5/5 Outstanding performances from Emma Thompson and newcomer Daryl McCormack complement a well written and moving story about self-acceptance and allowing oneself to experience pleasure.
Lucy And Desi: 3.5/5 Another contribution to the recent resurgence of Lucille Ball stories. It is fairly light and tame, but is an very enjoyable tribute to the original power couple that changed the course of comedy and TV history.
Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power: 4/5 This should be required viewing for film students. A literal masterclass on how camerawork perpetuates sexism, inequality, and sexual assault.
Calendar Girls: 3.5/5 Spotlighting fabulous women of a certain age this documentary reminds us all of the importance of community, staying active and finding your purpose. I can’t wait till they make a Diane Keaton movie out of this!
2nd Chance: 3.5/5 An evocative documentary about the man who invented the bullet proof vest but what really sticks with you is it’s thesis on how complex the human experience is and that people are never all good or bad.

What we watched Day 2 of #Sundance2022!
Nothing Compares: 3.5/5 Incredibly inspirational story of Sinead O’Connor with mediocre storytelling.
FRESH: 3/5 A predictable plot with good performances and a campy ending, but a bit too torture-porny for me.
We Met In Virtual Reality: 3/5 An interesting look at the world of VR and the emotional ways it’s brought people together. Scattered storytelling and a slow pace hurt its message though.
After Yang: 3.5/5 A gorgeous portrayal of a possible future where the overreach of technology isn’t as scary as it seems and that anything can evolve through love.

We’re having fun watching #Sundance2022! Here’s what we saw day 1:
Fire of Love: 4/5 Visually stunning and a moving story about a volcanologist couple who risked their lives to save the world from volcanoes.
The Worst Person In The World: 4.5/5 Excellent writing, directing, and performances make this a spectacular modern rom-com/drama.
When You Finish Saving The World: 1/5 Despite an all-star cast, the writing and one-dimensional characters are unsalvageable. Neither of us could make it through to the end.
The Princess: 2/5 The use of only archival footage and no new perspectives, (except time) makes it feel more like an editing challenge than a fully formed narrative.
